Things to do on Skye
- Otters - Visit the Otter Hide at Kylerhea. This is an easy 20 minute walk from the cottage. The hide is situated about 150 metres above the coastline giving good views over the Kylerhea narrows.
- Ring of Bright Water - The book and films were based on Gavin Maxwell who lived within a few miles, on Eilean Ban, an island where the Skye Bridge now crosses.
- Seals - About 200 common seals inhabit the Kylerhea narrows during the summer months. The seals can be seen hauled out on the rocks in Kylerhea village or on the skerries near the lighthouse. Seals hunting mackerel can be watched from the cottage.
- Fishing - Both sea angling and trout fishing is available around Kylerhea. You can spin for mackerel and saithe off the jetty or the Kylerhea "Fishing Rock" in the village.
- Bird watching - Many sea birds, ducks and waders pass through Kylerhea. The local sea eagles, named Victor and Orla are popular tourist attractions and have featured on several television shows. - Climbing - The Cuillin hills are renowned but there are many other places on the island. Dave & Jeanette are keen climbers and can advise on suitable places to visit. It is possible to hire a guide for more adventurous walks or on the cuillin mountains. See Skye Guides.
- Tourism - The Isle of Skye has always had a magical quality, but there are now many tourist attractions ranging from visits to Armadale and Dunvegan castles, Talisker Distillery, Portree harbour or boat tips to the heart of the Cuillin mountains.
- Driving and sightseeing - Leave lots of time to stop on your trips, the views are terrific! Skye is a large island it it takes over an hour and a half drive to reach the top of the Island..
- Photography - Skye is world renowned as a fantastic location for photographers. The landscapes and scenery are unique from the heights of the Cuillin mountains to the rocky coastline.
- Walking / Hiking - from a wander along the shoreline to a full-day hike in the high mountains. Skye has walks for all abilities.
- Sailing, Canoeing, Sea-Kayaking - There are local sea kayaking companies in Breakish, Plockton and Kintail that offer guided tours around the coast and some of the best kayaking in the world.
- Dining out - There are many great places to eat on Skye and on the mainland. From the Michelin starred Kinloch Lodge to great local fish and chip shops, all tasted and budgets are catered for.
- Local drinks - Talisker Whisky is the only distillery on Skye but there are also several micro breweries that produce great beers.
